Our Struggles
How We Rose To The Challenge of Covid 19
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 presented unprecedented challenges to communities worldwide, and Give Youth A Break was no exception. With the implementation of necessary public health measures, our organization was compelled to temporarily suspend in-person services, a decision made with the utmost concern for the safety and well-being of our beneficiaries, staff, and volunteers.
Recognizing the critical role Give Youth A Break plays in the lives of disadvantaged youth, we immediately initiated a comprehensive strategic response to ensure the continuity of our support. Our primary objectives were to maintain consistent engagement with our youth participants, mitigate the adverse effects of social isolation, and address the emerging needs of vulnerable families.
Our Adaptations and Initiatives:
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Give Youth A Break successfully maintained its commitment to supporting disadvantaged youth. Through our adaptable and responsive approach, we mitigated the negative impacts of social isolation, provided essential resources to vulnerable families, and fostered a sense of community during a period of unprecedented uncertainty.
The positive feedback received from youth participants and their families underscored the effectiveness of our initiatives. The resilience and adaptability demonstrated by our staff, volunteers, and participants were instrumental in navigating the complexities of the pandemic.

Our Adaptations and Initiatives:
- Remote Engagement and Virtual Programming: We transitioned to a virtual service delivery model, leveraging digital platforms to conduct online workshops, educational sessions, and recreational activities.
- Regular phone calls and digital communications were implemented to maintain personal connections and provide emotional support.
- Activity packs, containing educational materials, creative resources, and recreational items, were distributed to participants’ homes, fostering continued engagement and learning.
- Addressing Food Insecurity: In collaboration with local food banks and community partners, Give Youth A Break facilitated the distribution of essential food supplies to families experiencing food insecurity. We prioritized the provision of nutritional support to mitigate the impact of economic hardship on vulnerable households.
- Safe Community Outreach: “Porch drop” deliveries were implemented, enabling staff and volunteers to deliver care packages and maintain safe, socially distanced interactions with youth participants. These initiatives provided a sense of connection and reassurance during periods of heightened isolation.
- Technology and Resource Support: We recognized the digital divide and worked to provide resources and support to those who had trouble getting online. We worked to provide information on how to get online, and where to get access to devices. Impact and Outcomes:
